Potlatch #1 Paper Machine C2T Coater
Lewiston, ID

JH Kelly was awarded the contract to install Potlatch's new C2T Coater on the #1 Paper Machine based on its project team, project knowledge and past paper machine experience. This was a fast track project with JH Kelly providing constructability input as construction began and engineering was completed.

The project included the demolition of existing machine equipment, installation of the Paperchine-supplied coater, installation of approximately 20 relocated or new paper rolls and drives, installation of new mezzanine steel, all associated piping and instrumentation (including tanks and pumps), and miscellaneous concrete foundations. In addition to the Paperchine- supplied rolls, the following were installed: Megtec flotation dryer, Marsden IR dryer, ABB single-sided and O-Frame scanners, and Westpatt rope system (complete with drive, rope stretcher, and sheaves).

The project involved three shutdowns in order to complete demolition, sheet re-routing and necessary tie-ins, but the coater and the majority of the rolls, steel and piping were installed while the machine was still running.

The process allowed Potlatch to complete the machine upgrade while maximizing production. Over the course of six months, JH Kelly worked approximately 17,000 manhours without injury.

Special points of interest:
  • Completed during three shutdowns
  • Over 17,000 manhours
